ABOUT OMEGA 3 LABEL CLAIMS

SMARTGRAIN INDUSTRIAL CUSTOMER INFORMATION

Dated: Jan 24, 2010

CANADA

Due to current regulations, Omega 3 source claims can only be put on Canadian packaging if a total of 300 mg is attained per serving. This can be all ALA, all DHA (or DHA/EPA) or a combination of both. Because 300 mgs of DHA or DHA/EPA may impact taste and smell in the finished product at that level, SmartGrain recommends a combination of 200mg of ALA in combination with 100 mg of DHA and/or DHA/EPA. SmartGrain currently has two products that are ideal for that purpose, ingrained/sprouted flax (conventional and organic sourced) and ingrained/sprouted chia (conventional and organic sourced). Each product will allow for finished products to carry structure function claims: the health claims allowed by Canadian law for both ALA and DHA/EPA. Please note that claims for brain health are NOT permitted for ALA alone.

USA

The US currently allows for an excellent source claim for products containing DHA or DHA/EPA at 32 mgs per serving. SmartGrain has successfully ingrained a variety of grains such as wheat, barley and rice as well as flax, chia and grape seeds. This allows for easy incorporation into breads, pasta, cookies, muffins, etc. with no or minimal sensory issues.
